We stripped from our skirts and shirts, exchanging them for pieces of dry clothing we picked out of the luggage. Pip chose a worsted outfit of LaPlante’s. The trousers’ waist bunched under her holster belt, which she decided would never leave her person again. She admired the celluloid collar he had packed, and the mother-of-pearl button that came with it, so rolled those back in the luggage for future use.

I pulled on the suit of Mr. Cuckold, which fit as could be expected when one is five feet and nothing on a good day. I cut the legs with the straight razor from his shaving kit, then folded the new hemlines and sat on them to create flat cuffs. He was slim as he was tall, and that made for a tight fit at the hips and a loose one everywhere else. I tucked the shirt tails in and pulled the suspenders to my shoulders. Pip stepped over from where we’d spread the luggage contents to help tighten my suspenders so the pants wouldn’t sag off.

“Why is it men don’t carry sewing kits?” I asked. “It’s not as if they don’t get rips or loose buttons.” I stretched my neck one way and the other to loosen it, then braided my hair tight for convenience sake. “I could fix us up right now if we had a kit. You remember when we did that Promenade number? That was a fine set of suits, wasn’t it?”

“Sure it was.”

“I took in the sides a little differently, you remember that? With the four tucks and an arrow?”

“I finally saw you had breasts.”

“Well, to be honest, I addended my brassiere.” I pushed up my breasts, winked at her and sang.

For she never did the same thing twice:

And her hair was so lovely, to describe it puzzles me.
